Don't ask Don't Tell...How about Don't ask Don't Care?

Not all of my thoughts are sports related and maybe they should be but has the world become just a bit too intrusive?

The US military's policy of Don't Ask Don't Tell continues to be under attack.  It clearly discriminates against gay people.  Should gay people have fewer rights than everyone else?  Does sexual orientation make some more fit than others to serve their country in times of great need?  Is a gay person any more or less likely to faithfully and adequately perform their military duties than a straight person?

I would prefer a policy of Don't Ask Don't Care.

I truly don't care what your preferences are about: sex, politics, religion, homelessness, animal cruelty, peanut allergies, the national debt, what Kim Kardashian had for dinner last night or any other number of highly important topics as long as you show up on time and do your job...well.

Whatever happened to checking all of that personal stuff at the door and doing your job?  And if you do your job well why should anyone care about what you did or may do on your free time?  Or who you did it with?

Dude...you do your job and I'll do mine...and after that...have a great weekend!

But did you see what Kim K. was wearing last night.

Should female reporters be allowed in the locker room?

Should female sports reporters be allowed in the men's locker room for post-game interviews?

Hmm...

Are male reporters be allowed in the ladies' locker room for post-game/competition interviews?  I don't think so.

Why should any reporter be allowed in the locker room immediately post-game?

It's inappropriate.  How many times have you seen an interview where some player in the background walk through bare butt or in a towel?  Or some visiting dignitary walks through and gets an eye full?

How about this?

The players regardless of gender are allowed a reasonable amount of time to relax, shower and change before the barrage of media personnel regardless of gender descend on them in the press conference room and not the locker room.

Equal access to all sports journalists that are merely trying to do their jobs.

See, MMA does have something valuable to teach the rest of the sporting world.

Just because you don't enjoy MMA doesn't make you a bad person

If someone doesn't enjoy watching figure skating, soccer/futbol, baseball or cricket what does that say about them as a human being?

Absolutely nothing in my book.

But for some sad reason, if a person does not enjoy the sport of MMA they become a target for personal attack by a vocal segment of the MMA fan base.  The vitriol, venom and pure hate spews forth at an alarming rate.

If you don't agree just log on to a chat forum on any popular MMA web site and type that you do not understand the fascination with watching 2 men pummel each other and roll around on a mat and wait a moment for the show.

When I read many of the comments on popular MMA web sites I begin to understand some of the hesitance and negative views held by some towards MMA as a legitimate sport. I wonder if those people whom have a dim view of MMA actually dislike the physicality of the sport or the mentality of a vocal portion of the fan base?

I strongly disagree with the anti- MMA position of NY Assemblyman Bob Reilly but I do not agree with assassinating his character with vile insults.  His personal feelings about MMA say nothing about him as a person.

If Joe Buck said the things that Joe Rogan said about Mr. Reilly, Buck would have just called his last NFL or MLB game.

Unfortunately in MMA that type of ugly rhetoric plays well with many of the MMA faithful.

Do many of my comments doom me as a 'popular' voice in MMA?  Probably but personal integrity means a great deal to some.

The Importance of Zero Tolerance for PED's in MMA

Chael Sonnen, despite what ever his argument/excuse may be, got caught taking a performance enhancing drug (PED).  He is not the first and most certainly will not be the last to try and gain an unfair advantage or gets caught.

This latest revelation in this on going dark saga merely emphasizes 3 points:

• Contact sports and combat sports in particular must maintain a vigorous zero tolerance policy as it pertains to PED’s.
• The PED problem in MMA is bigger than many may appreciate.
• It is time for Olympic style testing including random year around sampling and blood testing in elite MMA.

Contact sports like football and combat sports like boxing and MMA have a fundamental and important difference to their non-contact brethren.  In contact and combat sports the application of significant bodily force to ones opponent is critical and virtually constant.

As a physician, I look at fair play a bit differently than most. I am less interested in who wins the contest as I am concerned about each competitor’s ability to fairly defend themselves on the field of battle.

If a sprinter gains an unfair advantage by using a PED they potentially run faster than the person in the lane next to them.  If a baseball slugger uses a PED they may hit more home runs than they otherwise would or should have.  If a football player or fighter uses PED’s they have the ability to cause serious harm to an opponent which is a vastly different outcome.

Zero tolerance in contact and combat sports means that no one should care that your excuse may be that you unknowingly took a tainted or mis-labeled nutritional supplement.  That will mean very little to the competitor that you injured.

And just to be clear.  We’re not talking failed tests due to cold remedies and asthma inhalers here.

HDNet's Inside MMA 3rd Anniversary & Controversial Comments

Congratulations Inside MMA, Bas Rutten, Kenny Rice and Ron Kruck. I enjoy the show and appreciate what it does for the sport of MMA.

Great work guys!!

I've been on the show a couple of times and these professionals love what they do.  I was once a welcomed guess but things apparently have changed and they no longer want my voice or input.  Clearly the powers that be at Inside MMA are not fond of yours truly.  The feeling is not mutual because I remain a loyal supporter of the show!

Joe Rogan, Mark Cuban and Mayhem Miller went in hard on New York Assemblyman and ardent MMA opponent Bob Reilly.  Mr. Reilly's comments comparing MMA to dog fighting and prostitution was provocative to say the least.  Assemblyman Reilly has gained a great deal of exposure with his blockade of the movement for the legalization of MMA in New York state.  It has always been good politics (now that's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one) to latch on to a popular issue for personal publicity.

Joe Rogan and the boys made some very funny comments, cursed freely and alleged the Assemblyman might be involved in pedophilia with young boys...all things that play well with the MMA faithful.

These displays make Joe Rogan more popular with the people that already love him but make the delicate task of changing hearts and minds in the NY legislature a bit more difficult.

I love the announcing talents of Joe Rogan and Mark Cuban is the man in the business world (he's also great on HBO's Entourage) but the shock and awe campaign of "F"-bombs and "dungeons of naked boys" quips make the MMA legalization mountain a little harder to climb.

Now I'll never be on Inside MMA again.

UFC ?: Edgar v Maynard...Who wants to pay to see that?

Frankie Edgar clearly is a talented fighter but his style makes for amazingly boring fights.  There is absolutely no threat of finishing the fight. He's all over the ring and only engages in short tactical bursts.

Once again, it is effective but I wouldn't watch it and then operate heavy machinery or drive home for that matter.

Gray Maynard is undefeated in the octagon but no one needs to worry about the place catching on fire.  He is a master of the little known octopus fighting style.  He grabs on tight and does little else...then the fight is over and the judges sit there confused and bewildered.

Now Dana White must convince the paying public that Edgar v Maynard is more than an undercard fight.  For the near future, the UFC lightweight division title picture is more effective than Ambien.

Thank goodness for the WEC.

NFL: Increasing to an 18 schedule is Great for the Owners

On first take, an increase in the number of 'real' regular season games and a decrease in the meaningless scrimmages otherwise known as the preseason are good things...right?

Well it definitely is for the NFL owners...players and probably fans not so much.

Owners
Increasing the regular season to 18 games means 2 more full stadiums with the dollars generated via ticket sales and concessions. And please don't forget the almighty TV revenue.

Players
Their contracts are for the season not a per game basis so they just get 18 slightly smaller paychecks but the total doesn't change.  Maybe they'll get to share in the increased revenue with the new collective bargaining agreement still yet to be successfully negotiated...but that's the big unknown.

A few things that they can be most certain of are more injuries (especially concussions), shorter careers and potentially less realized incentive money because of seasons shortened by injury.

Fans
It's all good until we get deep into the season and you are wondering where are all of the stars that you paid good money to see or what happened to that stud on your fantasy team?  It's simple.  He's standing on the sideline in street clothes injured.

Who wants to see the playoffs with third string QB's starting?

Strikeforce Houston: A very sad day for Athletic Commission in the Great State of Texas

This is a very sad day for me.  I am a proud son of Houston and the Great State of Texas.  As a graduate of both Baylor University and medical school at the Univ. of Texas, I will die with my boots on but what has been allowed to transpire in Texas is a disgrace...and no I'm not discussing politics.

The refereeing in Texas has been suspect for quite some time.  If you question this statement please google "Laurence Cole".  He is the son of TDLR director Dick Cole and the ref that was suspended for telling boxer Juan Manuel Lopez to quit after an inadvertent cut because he was ahead in the fight and would win when the score cards were tallied. Please do the search because this is far from his only transgression.

During the KJ Noons v Jorge Gurgel contest, Gurgel was dropped with a devastating hook after the bell and an illegal knee to the head while grounded.

FYI- Jon Jones was disqualified under similar circumstances in a contest against Matt Hamil.

I do not think for one moment that Gurgel was winning the fight but I do believe that the punch in question lead to the demise of the fighter.  Gurgel was clearly impaired and most likely suffered a concussion after that blow.

Both blows seemed directly related to the tentative and passive actions or inaction of the referee.

I thought that the night couldn't get much worse but unfortunately it did.

TDLR did not nor does it routinely conduct post-fight drug testing for fighters.  What?  The third most active state athletic commission does not routinely test fighters on fight night in 2010?

It's time for the Association of Boxing Commissions to step up and provide guidance to the good people at the TDLR.

Who's the Biggest MMA Star?

Who is the biggest star in MMA?

It's a very interesting question if you take a breath before you blurt out an answer.

I didn't ask who is the p4p best or who do you personally like the most.  I asked who is the biggest star?

I would define the biggest star as who can generate the most interest either good or bad.

People love GSP, Matt Hughes, Chuck Liddell and Captain America Randy Couture...and all for good reasons.  Just mention Fedor or Anderson Silva and the blood pressure rises and the pain of carpal tunnel increases as the comments fly.  Asian stars kind of get the shaft in this discussion because of a general lack of familiarity in the US market...Our loss.

My pick for biggest MMA star is a toss up between Brock Lesnar and Dana White.

I find my opinion on this matter to lead me to some interesting observations and even stranger questions.

Why does a fighter with as little experience in MMA as Mr. Lesnar star shine so bright?  He has 6 fights...that's it!  I am well aware of his NCAA and WWE past.  And he is truly a physiologic and athletic freak of nature.  But he is the biggest draw in the history of MMA with only 6 fights.

Apparently the celestial bodies lined up: the right guy, right weight class, chiseled herculean physique, mainstream name recognition and timing coinciding with the exponential growth of the UFC and internet.

Dana White doesn't even compete in the cage...never has.  But is arguably the most well known name in MMA even more so than the fighters themselves.  I guess Dana has become the Sean 'Puffy' Combs of MMA.

Can Dana dance or rap? 'BAD BOY'

A Message to America: We're better than Dr. Laura's Rhetoric

My disappointment with the rhetoric offered by the Sarah Palin’s, Dr. Laura’s, Rush Limbaugh’s, Don Imus’s and Glenn Beck’s of the world is that their messages resonate with so many Americans.

It seems that every time I begin to become encouraged and believe that there has been real substantial progress in OUR country something happens to remind me that many have merely put a more presentable façade on some of this country’s ugly unresolved issues.

America has so much more ability than is currently being realized.  There has always been this illusion of ‘Promise’ but the continued appreciation and consumption of this dark rhetoric continuously dispensed by the aforementioned and others makes me truly wonder.

I’m not amazed that these media darlings spew forth this filth but I must admit that I am very disappointed and somewhat disheartened that so many of my nice neighbors agree with and enjoy it.

Many writers have attempted to re-cast the latest events as merely another ‘teachable moment’.  But why must these opportunities continue to come at the expense of the dignity of other decent Americans?

In my heart, I continue to believe that WE are far better than this despite OUR continued consumption of non-productive chatter and worse.

Did the caller seek Dr. Laura’s professional help to be berated and publicly humiliated?  Did the good doctor fulfill the highest standards of her profession? (Then again, what are the professional standards of a talk show host?  Better yet- what is she a doctor of?) Or did Dr. Laura once again use a real person seeking help as just another opportunity to propagate her personal agenda and beliefs all for the sake of ratings and the almighty dollar?

Newsflash

These talking head, pundit, media darling, know-it-all experts are playing their listening audiences for fools with their outlandish, over-the-top and divisive commentary.  They don’t care what they say and they certainly don’t care who they hurt.  They are in the business of selling inflammatory provocation and fear mongering neatly packaged as entertainment and apparently business is very good.

Schlesinger, Palin, Imus, Limbaugh & Beck Inc. makes untold millions from doing exactly what constructive?  This particular media conglomerate has done absolutely nothing to solve any of America’s numerous, very real and significant issues but the money keeps rolling in…and a sizeable portion of ‘we the people’ keep listening.

When will we support a talk show host that actually attempts to find meaningful and respectful resolution to some of America’s more difficult issues?  Are we ready for a host that moderates an intelligent dialogue instead of one that preys on insidious, petty fears and tells the huddled masses what to think?

Instead of sound bites and obstruction what about civil discourse and production?  Is America ready for insightful media voices that use their platforms for something more than merely catering to their massive egos and helping themselves to the low hanging fruit?
