The drug-testing in MMA and Boxing are a joke anyway. Anything else than olympic style testing allows the fighters to take drugs during training camp and therefore have better training. If someone like Chael gets caught it just shows that the person was to stupid to do it right. This suspension shortening just show how much of a joke the whole damn system is. Get olympic style testing and you will have a cleaner sport, thats how I see it!

I wholeheartedly agree with your comments. Not only is Manny an excellent fighter but even more importantly he is a wonderful human being. He could teach all of us a thing or two about compassion, sportsmanship, and grace.

Dr. Benjamin,

It’s very hard to disagree with such a distinguished fraternity of Boxing Champions. However, I would respectfully submit one of the possibly ‘overlooked’ fighters to be added to your sub-group is former Heavy Weight Champion, Larry HOLMES (69-6-44 KO’s) over a career span of nearly 30 years.

Cheers,
Bert
Toronto, Canada

What about Floyd? I think that virtually everyone thinks Pac Man is the best fighter ever, but he wouldn't fight Mayweather because of drug testing. If he's fighting clean, why wouldn't he agree to the fight and make a cool $50 million+ for spending 36 minutes in the ring with Mayweather and erase all doubt as to his world dominance of boxing? I guess in my mind there's a cloud hanging over Pacquiao's greatness.

Comment on NFL Scouting Combine...Does it truly evaluate hidden talent or just a dark relic?

I randomly came across this post but I have to say that you are SPOT ON. I have been to countless combines and it really is a meat market. The NFL combine, although carried out with the greatest level of quality and glamour really does not seem that different from the other "auction block" style combines that my be seen at the CFL and Arena level . The guys who have responded negatively to your post MOST LIKELY never particpated in a combine or have not intimately known of athletes that have. The athletes will be the first ones to tell you exactly how it feels to be measured, tested, and evaluated to a science. Although you are being presented with a significant opportunity, its a bit grueling and you highlight one of the most important facts: These test do not always speak to actual performance. This has been proven time and time again. Past performance speaks to future performance and game film or live skill testing will always be the best indicator of potential. The part that has always bothered me a little bit is watching guys strip down to their underwear/tights to run their 40. If you have ever been to a combine for Arena, CFL or the UFL...then you have likely seen this. All sports require speed, agility, and strength. Football is the only one that regiments standardized agility/strength tests in such a way that they may overshadow actual performance. The NBA and MLB don't do because demonstrated SKILL is largely the greatest factor for selecting a player and football should be no diff.

I agree for the most part.

Cain's tale is definitely one of hard work and sacrifice paying off for the better. American dream at work.

I don't have a problem with all the "brown pride" promotion. It's genius from a business standpoint, boxing has survived for years now on the Hispanic fans, and if the UFC and MMA in particular could get even a fraction of these fans interested, it would be huge for the sport. The UFC right now has probably the most diverse roster of any sport. Look at the champions...

LW: Edgar: New Jersey boy
WW: GSP: French Canadian
MW: A. Silva: Black Brazilian
LHW: Shogun: Brazilian
HW: Cain: Mexican

On the last free event on Spike, the main event was a british fighter against a japanese one. This sport is tailor made for all ethnicities right now.

However...

Personally, I find it hard to appreciate the mexican heritage being played up because like most white people, I can't relate. I don't have any significant heritage to feel proud of. So when I see his mexican heritage being playing up I literally have no way to relate to it. And I think the resentment against the ethnic factor as a whole comes from this feeling of not having any ethnic pride themselves.

That and racist assholes trolling the internet, of course.

Good post though, always enjoy a sane, thoughtful blog. As rare as it is on the internet.

I agree and think that that's an issue that gets resolved in that a society gets more "developed" in a democratic sense. The less rigid the social framework, the less deviations are frowned upon. By social framework I primarily mean the prevalence of religious and political dogma in said society. If we take the US as an arbitrary example I suspect that gay-bashing, extreme nationalism and intolerance might be greater in rural (maybe southern) areas, where the social framework is more homogen and strict than in say San Francisco or New York. This isn't because urban areas lack morality in a greater sense, but because the deviations are so numerous that it isnt really practical to go around with a constant frown. So don't ask don't care becomes the more practical (and in my mind more sympathetic) approach. I don't want to point fingers to specific establishments gaining from said rigidity, but here's hoping for a new age of enlightment! Thank you, as always, for a great blog!
Jonas
Sweden

Hello doc! This is off topic, but it's a question I want to ask you, who knows- maybe you'll find the time to reply. I read your article about Big Countrys size and what it does to his cardio. My question is: If you take Lesnar, who is huge but seems to be training (cardio)as much as you possibly can. Will he by default have worse cardio than say Velasques, just because he has that extra 25 pounds of muscle, or is it physically possible for him to be on par cardio/muscle? What's the equation here, if any? I hope to see you on MMA live again!
Sincerely
Jonas
Sweden
