Back to School Checklist: Concussions, Staph & H1N1 protection

It's about that time.  Summer is drawing to an end and both parents and kids are thinking of the beginning of the new school year.  Parents are looking forward to it and children...well probably not so much.

As both parents and students prepare their back to school lists of must have items and concerns, please do not forget to consider sports related concussions and adequate protection against Staph and H1N1 infections.

The rate of concussions rise as practice for sports begins.  The earlier in the season the more concussions.  Talk to the young athletes in your family and not merely those in traditional contact sports like football.  Also. please, please, please don't forget the young ladies.

Concussions in girl's lacrosse and soccer are very real and also very common.  Remember, in lacrosse boys wear helmets to help better protect them but girls for reasons that escape me are not allowed to.

Staph skin infections and the H1N1 virus are no longer hot topics on the 24 hour news cycles but just give it a moment.  They are both positioned for a major comeback.

My advice to you- protect yourself and your loved ones.  Don't expect someone (whoever that is) to protect you or your kids.  With virtually every school district facing major budget cut and red ink don't just assume that the proper safeguards are in place to protect child.

And don't forget your older child going away to college.  College dorms and apartments are places that put a lot of young people in tight and confined shared spaces.

Remember how small dorm rooms are?  Not to mention the shared showers...remember shower shoes?
