Floyd Mayweather is an Ass...Ok, what about Chael Sonnen?

At some point selling a fight can go too far and cross the line... Welcome to UFC 117 and Chael Sonnen.

The general consensus is that Floyd Mayweather is an ass.  You'll get no quarrel from me there but where is the universal demonization of Chael Sonnen?

Apparently, the rules are different for Mr. Sonnen's brand of rhetoric or hate (depending on where you stand).  The content of his speech can be considered racist, xenophobic, mean spirited, ill-directed at non-participants ("Lance Armstrong gave himself cancer") and motivated by the lowliest forms of greed and self promotion.

There is something dark about Chael Sonnen and unfortunately his beliefs that seem to resonate with some people.  It seems as if he's that voice that is speaking some unknown truth that many believe but for various reasons choose not to articulate in such a public fashion.

I'm concerned that more people than I may have imagined secretly agree with his filth and are relieved and encouraged that someone finally said it out loud.

Say what you want but UFC 117 is being sold on something potentially far more damaging than a rear naked choke or an elbow strike.

Chael Sonnen seems to appeal to a dark place in humanity that apparently may never be fully extinguished.

Floyd Mayweather may be an ass but to me Chael Sonnen is potentially something far, far worse.

I think it has more to do with people's bitterness with Anderson Silva than their approval of Sonnen. Also, the things Sonnen have said are so insanely over the top it's difficult to take any of it seriously.

Also he's not a dominant champion, he's a soon to be one time contender.

I have to agree with the above. After suffering through Anderson Silva's last few fights, he has made himself the bad guy. I am seriously hoping he loses so that he becomes motivated again, like GSP after Matt Serra. I hold no ill-will towards the man, other than a feeling I have not gotten my money's worth his last few fights.

I think if Sonnen pulled the same antics with someone popular with the fans, he would make himself the bad guy.

Sonnen has been speaking like a true politician.

Talking big might sell pay-per-views, but it doesn't win fights.

He'll be eating his words Saturday night.
