Random thoughts on UFC 111
UFC 111 was a good night of fights. The Prudential center in NJ is rapidly becoming a top tier destination for MMA. They sell more tickets there than they do in Vegas.
Now a few thoughts on the fights:
Hamman def. Wallace: Whatever these two guys lacked in skills they made up for in heart. It wasn't pretty but they gutted it out and never laid down. They left it all in the cage. Much respect.
Palhares def Drwal: That was a vicious leg lock/heel hook. He applied that thing so quickly and so deeply it was startling. Now if Palhares could only learn to release it as fast, he'd really be in to something...vicious.
Diaz def. Markham: Whomever continues to say that the Diaz brothers can't fight needs to seriously kiss my a$$ 2 times. With Nate's move up in weight, he ratcheted his game up 2 notches. Markham missed weight and on fight night was closer to LHW (205 lbs.) than he was to welterweight (171 1bs.). It didn't seem to matter. Nate beat the brakes off Rory Markham...which is no small feat. WOW!! Stockton stand up!!
Carwin def. Mir: I'm no Shane Carwin fan but I was last night. He gave Frank Mir exactly what he deserved. Mir's cockiness and ridiculous comments about Lesnar didn't help him much while Carwin was tappin' that a$$. Note to Frank Mir: concentrate on who's in front of you and take it down a notch.
GSP def. Hardy: GSP...need I say more? But I'll tell you one thing...Hardy is faaar from a sissy. That kid is tough!!

Doc-
Great article describing Maia's valsalva-related swelling. As a pilot I "valsalva" for the flight doc every time I see him; but it's to check the passage of air through the sinuses and equalize ear pressure. Any chance that a busted sinus could "leak" air into the surrounding tissue?
