Lawmakers fear MMA...They should be concerned about metal bats in baseball
Lawmakers in states like New York continue to fear MMA citing safety concerns. This tactic may be better described as misinformation. misunderstanding and fear mongerring.
It seems that the lawmakers of the City of New york understand the issues far better than some of their colleagues at the State level.
The State of New York has still been unable to effectively legislate professional MMA competition within their borders unlike the vast majority of other states. But it allows the most dangerous of all professional sports, bull riding.
The City of New York has banned the use of metal bats in high school baseball secondary to very legitimate concerns about player safety...but the State allows the continued use of metal bats at the high school level in all other locales.
If the State of New York (or anyone else for that matter) thinks MMA is unacceptably dangerous they should read the story of Gunnar Sandberg.
Gunnar is a 16 yo high school baseball player from northern California whom on March 11th was struck in the head by a ball hit from a metal bat. He is now in intensive care battling for his life. This type of horrible accident (and worse)plays out a hundred times or more virtually every year on diamonds all across America.
If New York State Assemblymen truly want to protect athletes they should ban metal bats at all levels of baseball and stop unnecessarily impeding professional MMA.
My prayers go up for Gunnar and his family.
