MMA growth stymied by pay-per view?

It's no secret that I love watching MMA. The more quality MMA there is to watch the better, as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe I am the only one but I am growing weary of paying $45 a show.

I know there is an occasional at no-additional charge UFC fight night or WEC card (but I'm one of the unlucky ones that is caught in the Direct TV vs. Comcast/Versus feud) and Strikeforce is doing their sporadic thing but damn...the UFC has the best talent; and they're gonna make you pay.

I know it's America and the UFC is a business.  Believe me.  I get it.  But now, like many others, I am picking and choosing which cards I'll take a chance on and purchase by looking at the names of the fighters.  In my opinion this is the worst way to enjoy MMA.

If anyone can devise a better system please let me know because the current state of affairs does not seem sustainable.

My fear is that MMA will go the way of televised poker.

You fear MMA will go the way of televised poker? How so? Poker has never been on PPV, is still available on ESPN (WSOP and WSOPE), the Fox sports networks, every single late night on network TV (Poker After Dark), a Heads Up Championship every year on NBC on Saturday afternoons, ... I truly don't understand the comparison at all. Elaborate please?
