Golden Boy's decision may hit Mayweather in the pocket
I'm no fight promoter but I'm fairly proficient at simple math with the assistance of a calculator.
Golden Boy promotions which handles Money Mayweather just declined to tour/consider Jerry Jones' Dallas Cowboy Stadium. Golden Boy clearly prefers the potential Pacquiao vs Mayweather mega fight to happen at the MGM Garden in Las Vegas.
So much for bargaining leverage.
Hmmm.
Jerry Jones' palace is a brand new, futuristic, state of the art facility with a HD digital display that is 180 ft. long. It has 100,000 seats and fan pleasing luxuries beyond compare.
MGM Garden has approx. 15,000 seats and as a facility is about like any other low-tech arena that you've ever seen...nothing special. If you've been to a NBA arena recently you'd have been to a cut above the MGM Garden.
Arenas must fork over a 'site fee' to host a big fight. Which arena do you think will generate more $$$ at the gate and from concessions? The one with 100,000 seats or the one with 15,000 seats?
The fighters' money is called the 'purse' of which they agree to split; most likely 50/50 for this fight. The purse is made up of monies from 2 main sources: site fee + a percentage of ppv buys.
The number of PPV buys are likely to be similar regardless of the arena (est. 2.5-3 million). Therefore, the true variable is the site fee. Who can afford to offer more? The 100,000 seat arena or the one with 15,000 seats?
Hmmm.
Some people will say 'don't forget about the $$$ that the casinos will kick in to have the fight in Las Vegas. I don't know about that. The last time that I checked the casinos were bleeding money and cutting back in a big way. They have to comp (give away) the farm to get gamblers to come in and apparently gamblers aren't spending what they used to.
It appears that Golden Boy promotions is making a business decision that affects the purse on this fight in order to do business in Vegas in the future with other fights. That may be a reasonable long range business decision for their promotional company but it may be a costly decision for Money Mayweather in this fight. And believe me, this pay day is the only one that Floyd cares about.
A long career or another pay day is not guaranteed in the fight game.
