Concussions are a serious matter...is anyone listening?

Many people and obviously just as many athletes still fail to understand concussions and the significance of this injury.

Several teammates, including cornerback Joe Haden and linebacker Ryan Stamper, said they were surprised by how much attention Tebow's injury has received.
"I think the media is kind of blowing it out of proportion," Stamper said. "Again, the hit and how he was, I can't really say I blame them. ... But when we found out it was a concussion, everyone gets concussions. Stuff like that happens. I guess because it happened to him everyone is blowing it up, but I think he'll be fine."

I feel like John the Baptist crying out in the wilderness.

Few respect concussions until it is too late. Obviously, concussions happen so commonly during the careers of Division-1 college football players that as the above statement clearly displays ‘familiarity breeds contempt’.

A study commissioned by the National Football League reports that Alzheimer’s disease or similar memory-related diseases appear to have been diagnosed in the league’s former players vastly more often than in the national population — including a rate of 19 times the normal rate for men ages 30 through 49.  (Alan Schwarz- NY Times 9.29.09)

This study, as discussed in this article (along with many others), links the issues related to cognitive function (thinking, memory, mood etc…) with a history of concussions.

Hello out there... is anyone listening??
