Strange days...Rampage quitting and Herschel wants in

Professional athletes are people too.

Many times the blogosphere seems to forget that simple fact.  They have feelings, families, dreams and aspirations just like us regular folks.  They don't possess superhuman powers and they do feel pain.

Many fans, people who place comments on message boards and just plain old haters see the internet as their chance to take a 'free shot'.  They post comments that they would never in their right mind say to anyone's face much less a man with the ability to dismember like Rampage Jackson.

Many feel that since a pro athlete makes big bucks and they purchased a ticket or signed up for a screen name they in some way have the constitutional right to spew hate.  Freedom of speech is one thing being an ass is another.

Rampage may not be your favorite fighter but he can still whip your ass.  So be mindful and respectful of an athlete that is willing to do it and not just type about it.

Herschel Walker may in some people's minds may be too old at 47 to be very successful in MMA at a high level ( I happen to be one of those people).  But I certainly believe that he should have his opportunity to prove the naysayers wrong.

I believe that Strikeforce is taking a much bigger gamble than Herschel.  If they over promote/hype him for ratings sake, he gets hurt or bombs they will take one more step towards becoming another ProElite XC.

And we all know how well that worked out for them!

What is your stance on Herschel Walker being allowed to fight considering his mental medical history?

If you are not aware of it then here is a link to an interview with Bob Woodruff when he was promoting his book last year:

    http://www.herschelwalker.net/content.asp?title=ABC%27s%20Nightline%20Interview%20with%20Bob%20Woodruff&menuid=Interviews&contentid=ABC%20Bob%20Woodruff&id=112

Here is a couple quotes that worry me:

"The athlete who played 15 seasons of professional football in the NFL and USFL and pushed a bobsled for the 1992 U.S. Olympic team in Albertville, France; the family man who married his college sweetheart; the man who once danced with the Fort Worth Ballet; the business man

Walker says none of those guys were him. Not really. Those were his "alters," he says -- alternate personalities. "

Now isn't he stating that in every other case of him participating in sporting events that it wasn't really him it was an "alter"? Now this is a serious question here not a joke question. When he fights will it be an "alter" fighting just like every other time he participated in sports or will it be the real Herschel?

I'm not trying to take cheap shots at Herschel here I'm trying to ask some serious questions based on his past admissions of his mental health.

A couple more quotes that worry me:

"There were other incidents Walker does not recall. "I was pregnant and it was probably 100 degrees out," Grossman said. "Herschel was dressed in a full sweat suit, tights, sweats, jacket, and he was running through the house. ... he said, 'Close the door. I am having bad thoughts. I am thinking I am going to hurt you.'"

"On another occasion, Walker threatened to kill his wife, his wife's friend and his therapist in a therapy session. "

"Woodruff asked which alters are good and which are bad. "Oh, there's a lot of bad ones in there," Walker answered."

The dots might not connect on this but this made me wonder if "alters" come out when he is participating in sports as he previously stated in the interview and some of these "alters" are clearly dangerous is it safe for him to be competing in a sport where the objective is to hurt someone?

Maybe I'm just overly worried about something bad happening when the percentage of something bad happening is small or not at all. I don't know something about this just worries me.

This question might be off base also but just wondering would there be any extra concern regarding a concussion and/or Post Concussion Syndrome if that were to happen?
