Post Draft Day Note to NFL rookies: You're not in Kansas anymore
The annual spectacle called the NFL Draft has just concluded. The actual draft may be the focal point but the events surrounding hearing a players name announced at Radio City Music Hall are nothing to sneeze at. These events or parties (seems like a better word to me) are truly from another planet.
Red carpet walks, paparazzi, celebs from music, film, fashion and scores of sports superstars mingled at the hottest venues amidst a sea of free flowing booze. And did I mention women? Whoa...at least 10 scantily clad, young ladies per NFL player. And those were just the ones that could actually gain admission. The crowds, at the entrances begging to get in, grew so large it prompted visits from the fire marshal at many venues.
Everyone seemed to enjoying themselves. Though, I look at this picture from a very different perspective. I see 20-something year old men with heaping pockets full of money, public adoration, very late nights, copious amounts of free time, a seemingly never ending parade of beautiful women and far too much liquor.
Sounds like a recipe for potential disaster to me. What does anyone do to prepare these young men for this brave new world that awaits them off the grid iron?
And most of these gifted young men have not even signed their first NFL contract yet.
My grandmother (may God rest her soul) used to say that "God watches out for babies and fools". I pray that God also protects NFL rookies.
