WEC 40: Torres v Mizugaki illustrated the advantages of striking
WEC 40 was a great card and the main event was an instant classic!!!
Who would have ever imagined a little known Japanese, replacement fighter with an 11-2-2 record would have been so good? He did the impossible and took the king to the 5th round. He gave one of the pound-for-pound elite (Miguel Torres) a real run for his money. Much respect to Takeya Mizugaki...we see you!!
The Torres-Mizugaki war nicely illustrated the advantages of striking over wrestling. A devastating striker with a decent take down defense and sprawl can give the world's best a hell of a hard time.
All contest begin standing up...advantage striker. Stalemates, either on the ground or clinches against the cage, force the ref to intervene...once again, advantage striker. Strikers are fan favorites (ala Chuck the 'Iceman' Liddell) which certainly helps with promoting and marketing the fighter...advantage striker.
Grappling and jiu jitsu require a deep appreciation of technique and a significant fund of knowledge. Everyone understands a good KO.
Takeya Mizugaki may be a one trick pony but he's got that trick down pat!!
