UFC 94 'Decision of the night' bonus should be paid to BJ Penn's corner

GSP's performance once again proved that a good bigger man beats a good smaller man all day every day and apparently twice on Saturday nights.  Georges St. Pierre was unstoppable.  What appeared on paper to be a superfight, in reality turned out to be a historic mismatch.

The pre-fight count down shows were a foreshadowing of things to come.  BJ Penn spoke disrespectfully of his opponent and GSP trained.  BJ took time off to relax at a resort and GSP trained harder.  The Penn family was together daily as they welcomed new arrivals into their tight knit clan. GSP lived in a hotel and ate dinner with his parents just once before he left for Las Vegas.  BJ attempted to maintain some degree of normalcy before the battle.  GSP chose to put himself through hell.

I do not mean to imply that BJ was not focused or committed.  GSP was just more of all the above.  He inflicted his will and considerable damage on BJ.

Nearing the end of the 4th round, referee Herb Dean gave BJ ample opportunity to compete and change his position.  He gave Penn a champion's respect  by not stopping the fight in the waning moments, as BJ lay pinned to the mat getting mauled.

The Penn corner made the honorable and prudent decision to protect their fighter in a hopeless situation.

BJ Penn did not quit. Suggesting that he did is disrespectful to both brave men.  He was beaten by a bigger, stronger and more superior fighter, Georges St. Pierre.
