Notre Dame's coach Charlie Weis survives?

Are you kidding me?

The '08 'flailing' Irish of Notre Dame under the leadership of coach Charlie Weis are 3-9...no not 9-3...3 wins and 9 losses. Over the last 2 seasons the football team is...are you ready for this? 9-15!! Stunning, isn't it?!

The real stunner is that apparently Weis gets to keep his job!!

Let's review:

10-6 was his best season which was also his first season.  But Weis cannot take all of the credit for that campaign because he was coaching the previous coach's players (Ty Willingham).

Just a few weeks ago, Weis lost to lowly Syracuse, a team with 8 losses. (ND 1st)

Weis has lost 15 games over a 2 year stretch.  (ND 1st)

Previous coaches, Ty Willingham and Bob Davies had winning percentages of .583.  They both got the boot.

Charlie Weis' winning percentage is .571 (and it's .545 if you subtract his first year when he benefited from coach Willingham's players).  And he gets to stay???

You may ask yourself, why is the Doc writing about this?  This story has no medical angle.  You're correct.  But after these shenanigans, I think that I may need a doctor because I'm about to get sick.

Hey Dr. Johnny. I love your work on MMAJUNKIE, bur I have to disagree with your Charlie Weiss analysis. I know what your underlying point is, that Willingham and Weiss were not treated equally and the reason is race.

First, Weiss came in with a pedigree that Willingham could never compete with. Weiss had numerous superbowl ring and was sought after as one of the hottest coaching commodities in both the NFL and college football. He chose Notre Dame over many other job offers and in his first season went 10-6. Now looking back you say well that was 10-6 with Willingham's players, but at the time the feeling was that Weiss was able to do all this without even having the players he wanted in his system. The belief was that once he got the players he wanted, the rest of College Football better watch out. Unfortunately that offseason, depending on who you believe, Weiss pressured Notre Dame into giving him a large extension, which they obviously now regret.

The difference between he and Willingham is that Notre Dame is on the hook for 21 million over the next seven years. It's not black or white, its green.

As far as Willingham, as you may or may not know he was just fired from the University of Washington after leading them to an 0-12 season. He currently holds the worst coaching record ever at the University of Washington, so don't feel to bad for him.

My friend, you are very good.  Much respect to your kung fu!

I agree with everything that you so eloquently wrote BUT Weis' money is guaranteed.  Fire him or keep him...you still owe him his money.

Weis may (and I'm being generous here) be a decent coach but apparently he can't recruit worth a damn.

So why pay him and lose when you could start rebuilding with another coach?

Is this just the coaching version of 'cheaper to keep her'?
