It's only a pinkie, right...what's the big deal Tony Romo?

It's only a pinkie, right? How bad can it hurt? A lot!! Just ask Dallas Cowboy's QB #9 Tony Romo. Romo is trying to convince himself and Cowboy's brass that he can go this weekend against the St. Louis Rams.
The broken digit in question happens to be on his right throwing hand. Gripping the football tightly is very important in order to throw with the velocity required of an NFL quarterback. Unfortunately, a broken 5th finger will hinder a firm grip. A weak grip means less velocity, less accuracy and greater potential for interceptions and fumbles.
I can hear the Dallas faithful now...'just shoot it up and numb the finger'. Not with my hand you don't. This 'solution' sounds great but in reality doesn't work well. Just because he wouldn't feel an anesthetized pinkie it will not significantly increase his ability to grip the ball. The pain is temporarily gone but the finger is still broken. Also he would be placing himself at increased risk for further more significant injury.
Romo's finger was broken on the first play of overtime. He promptly bounced the next two passes leading to a 3 and out. And we all know what happened next. I've got 2 words of medical advice for Dallas Cowboy's head coach Wade Phillips....Brad Johnson.
