Jason Taylor sacked by a very swollen lower leg

Washington Redskin's recently acquired perennial pro-bowl DE #55 Jason Taylor (previous Miami Dolphin and recent Dancing with the Stars alum) will see his run of 133 consecutive games end this Sunday.  His team will face the high flying Dallas Cowboys without his services.

Taylor was kicked in the shin on Sept 21st. during a 21-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.  Apparently, his calf swelled dramatically creating an emergent situation called a compartment syndrome.

The leg (from the knee to the ankle) is comprised of 4 compartments that house muscle, blood vessels and nerves.  As an injured muscle begins to swell in a confined space, significant pressure can be placed on the other inhabitants of that space (compartment) specifically blood vessels and nerves.  Too much pressure for too long can cause permanent damage to some or all of the structures within that confined space.

If elevation of the leg and ice does not sufficiently reduce the swelling and pressure, a surgical procedure (fasciotomy) is undertaken to open the confined space and definitively relieve the pressure.

This procedure will need to heal and as a precaution Jason Taylor will have his activities limited for the next 2-3 weeks.  This injury and subsequent procedure should have no long lasting effect upon his performance or career.
